Welcome to One Word, One Goal 2013
Last year, I introduced a series I like to call “One Word, One Goal”. (and no……I did not come up with the idea…..I just think it’s great.) I’ve been picking one word goals for 3 years now, and they have been the most uplifting, and challenging, and rewarding resolutions I’ve ever made.
2011 was: BREATHE
2012 was: REFINE
AND 2013 IS GOING TO BE: RISE
I picked rise because it helps me face so many of the things that I am anticipating for 2013….and it challenges me to meet it and rise above it.
- arise: I gotta fight to get out of bed. I gotta fight to make my muscles work again. I gotta arise above the feeling that I am picked on. I gotta arise above the depression.
- rise up: I gotta rise up and share things that I know to be true with others. Including rising up and speaking about the health situation I face. I never know when I might help someone.
- glamor-rise: (okay that one is a stretch….gimmee a break) This one is to remind me that I need to take back my self-esteem. I have gained almost 80 pounds in a year. 80! You guys, it is so much that I can’t even fathom. I feel horrible about myself and I don’t know HOW I’m going to be seen in public for the next year. Nonetheless, I can glamor-rise and try to learn to love me. No matter what size I am.
- rise above: I feel like I need to rise above situations that bring me down. People that aren’t 100% on my side. I also need to rise above myself. Rise above pettiness. Rise above grudges. Rise above gossip.
- sun rise: And finally, guess what? Every day the sun comes up. And that is something to be grateful for. No matter where we are. No matter if we’re in pain. Alone. Scared. The sun is still there. And it kind of reminds me that someone else is there for me too. No matter what.

I have struggled for weeks about what word would help me this year. I KNOW that whether my upcoming surgery works or not I am in for a challenging year. But I think I love the idea of rising above the challenge. Rising above the negative reel of thoughts in my head. Rising above myself. And focusing on others. It’s so full of possibility I think it’s perfection.

I love all the variations of your word–I wish you the very best in this coming year, and know that so many people are pulling for you! I picked a Portuguese word this year. Aproveitar= “to take advantage of” I felt like I need to stop wasting
Great word! I wish for you the best of luck with your surgery! Keep us all posted on how you are doing!
Jo-Anna
I adore you Lara and the 80 lbs does not make one bit of difference in how I feel about you. I can only speak for myself, but I’m willing to bet most people feel the same. Will you remember that? That you are loved at a size 8 and a size whatever. All my best in the coming days. Love and prayers headed your way.
Beautiful choice! I’m rooting for you in all those ways and more.
xoxo
Great word! Love the printable. Thanks for making it available.
You’re in my prayers!
I never comment on any blogs I follow….not sure, just shy I guess….but I am compelled to comment here. As I have followed your story I admire your strength and courage as you face this challenge. I can’t imagine and I am sure that I would not have the grace you have. I would mire in one long pity party and you don’t. Your word makes me think of Maya Angelou’s poem, “And Still I Rise”. If you haven’t read it yet, you might want to. Good luck for an amazing 2013! Here’s to watching you rise!
Rise?! PERFECT!
I love how you worked in all those different “rises.” Such a fantastic idea and such a great way of looking at things.
Very fitting word for 2013!
I really like all the different ways you have found to use “Rises”…
Love! & Love You!
Oh my sweet little friend, you are so beautiful just the way you are, diet coke and all. We are praying for you and your family. I love your word for the year and you will rise and accomplish all you set out to do.
Could I ask you and all of your readers to please pray for my brother. He is having open heart surgery tomorrow (4th) and having 3 by-passes done. I want to storm the heaven with prayers just like I want to storm the heavens for you too. When is your surgery? Sorry I forgot. God Bless and lots of love.
Such a great idea!!!
80 lbs.
Here is something about me. In high school, I weighed 117 at my lowest and maybe 127 at my highest and I thought that I was a FAT PIG. Really. I look back on photos of that time and see a hot looking young woman and can NOT understand why I felt that way. Well, maybe I do. My best friend weighed 95-100 lbs and to me the extra 20-30 pounds was HUGE!!! I felt gynormous when walking beside her!
So now at the age of 46, I weigh more than 100 pounds more that my high school weight and although I would refer (and I constantly try) to be more healthy, I am more self confident that I ever was– not sure if it is age or what.
I think it is more in perception!
Good luck on your 2013 one word goal……. I think you rock!! Happy Day!!
I love that song “I will rise on eagles wings before my god fall in my knees”
This is my 5th year choosing OLW and I love it. This year I chose simplify.
Seems to really fit.
2009 focus
2010 peace
2011 purposeful
2011 satisfied
Prayers for you,
Valerie
I’ve never heard of the one word thing before this year. But as soon as I did, I knew my word was * breathe*
As in just
As in remember to
And i went one step farther and picked a theme to help me get to that word…..
Letting go!
Anyway. Ooc, with all your health stuff I’m curious if you’re on prednisone. I ask because I was on it for 3 years daily at decently high doses. Put on 60 pounds. I’ve been off it bow for 18 months. About 6-9 months after coming off, weight started falling off me!
I’ve lost 93 pounds now. I had to go back on it for 8 weeks this summer after developing Steven Johnson’s syndrome. I immediately in that 8 weeks gained 20 pounds back. Now 6 months later that 20 pounds suddenly fell back off. I’m back to losing weight consistently.
Without any help from me. Lol!
So if by any chance your medications include prednisone or any other oral steroid medication, please don’t fret. Push docs to find an alternate med for you to try if you’re still on it. But prednisone/steroid weight us temporary and leaves with the medication.
*hugs and lots of prayers*
Your new word is great! You WILL rise up in victory! And try not to worry about your weight – your sense of humor and your creativity come from your heart and your head, not your weight, and I, for one, love you most and come to your blog for your humor and your creativity! Your surgery WILL be a success and 2013 WILL be a victorious year for you! Prayers going up for you!
I love it in all it’s forms! You are amazing and inspire me so much. I love your creativity and your personality and I think you will conquer your goals this year!
This sounds great. Please email me updates. I’m in much the same place as you are describing and rise is the perfect word for me!!!
Lara! I decided a week ago to try this one word method. I made my typical New Year’s resolutions and they left me feeling like a complete failure. Again. So…I’ve been thinking, praying, pondering, etc. I wanted to tell you I just had my word come to me like you said it would, and I’m already feeling better about the year ahead! My word for the year is MORE! I can’t give everything I want this year, and I won’t be able to give my all, but I can give more than last year. And the words to the song More Holiness Give Me keeps singing in my brain! Thanks for sharing this idea. I’m feeling much better about life today! Love you!
Lara it was such fun spending time with you last week!! I hope your trip home was as good as possible!! I love your word for 2013 I just love it!! You are a beautiful and amazing woman!! I am so glad I was able to get to know you better!! And you better watch out I might just knock on your door around SNAP!!! I am sending good healing prayers your way!! And give your sweet Mother a hug for me!!
