The DIY Blogger House: Soon Open for Business

Authored By: ellie g Author/Writer
August 1, 2012 --7:30 PM

I am so excited to announce that the DIY Blogger House done with Daybreak Utah and Bangerter Homes for the Salt Lake City Parade of Homes is being debuted tonight at a VIP, invite only, party.  It will be open to the public beginning on August 3rd.

But LUCKY YOU!  I have been given special permission to give you a sneak-peak at some of the home’s most exciting spaces!

Early on in the project Char of Crap I’ve Made and I decided to team up on the 3 kids rooms. (all under the direction of Brian Clark, the project’s lead interior designer)

We had TONS of fun brain-storming and thinking about what we’d like to do.  But we ultimately decided on

  • A gender neutral nursery
  • A young boy’s room
  • A teenage girl room

The nursery has an AMAZING palette of lime green, citron, and turquoise.  I am IN LOVE with the art piece that we made for the wall above the crib.

In the upcoming days, Char will have tutorials on all her hard work in this room.  Including the bedding, pillows, nursery furniture, and art.

Our boy’s bedroom began with a swatch of Pac-Man like fabric.  We wanted to use it as inspiration for a room that evoked the feel of the awesome 80′s arcade game.  But didn’t scream, “THEME ROOM!!!”

By using the ideas behind the game, and pops of the inspiration fabric, we were able to come up with a fun room that would house a young dude, or a bigger one.

Watch LCMF and Crap I’ve Made for tutorials on the headboard, bedding, and overall decor of this fun room!

Our teenage girl’s room turned out to be my favorite part of the project.  We were able to work with the SLC chapter of the Make-A-Wish foundation to honor one of their past wish recipients.  So our plans started to revolve around depicting a wish to go to New York and become a fashion model for a day.

With a rich palette of metallics, plum, black, and white….the room is both sophisticated and encouraging.  The touch of lime green used by our designer Brian, is actually the official color for the kind of cancer our inspiration young lady was battling.  Gratefully, she is now doing much better.

Stay tuned to see how we came up with the headboard, stunning metallic art, and wall treatments.

Every space in the house is amazing.  You can find inspiration for both DIY projects, and affordable interior designer ideas.  Super innovative finishes and colors.

You won’t want to miss these other amazing spaces from the rest of the team:

  • Pantry & Dining Room : Shelley from House of Smiths
  • Laundry Room & Mud Room: Amy from The Idea Room
  • Study/Office: Jen from Tatertots & Jello

Each blogger will be giving in-depth details about her spaces.  And we will all continue to have more pictures, stories, and ideas from this amazing house.

I have had so much fun getting to collaborate with this superstar team.  And I’ve already mentioned….but MUST do so again….

All of these girls, particularly Char, and the Daybreak team have been so kind to let me continue working on the project even though my health hasn’t been good.  Char picked up WAY more than her fair share to make our ideas come to life.  She has been at my home late at night, all day long, and one time we even had a whole conversation that I don’t even remember.  (oopsie!)

If you are in the area, make sure to check out the amazing DIY Blogger house and all the other beautiful entries in the SLC Parade of Homes.  And if not…….NO WORRIES!  Looks like we’ll all be giving you a front row seat.  Yay!

Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend

Authored By: ellie g Author/Writer
July 31, 2012 --8:43 PM

Many of you are aware of my deep love for all things Neil Diamond.

I believe it began as a young girl.  My parents were fans.  Mostly my Dad.  I remember watching “The Jazz Singer” at quite a young age.  (probably younger than I should have been) and I totally didn’t understand 3/4 of it.  Particularly the part when the Dad tears his shirt.  I mean…..why would that Dad tear his shirt?  Weird.

Mostly, I just couldn’t get over how COMPLETELY awesome every single song was.  I mean “America”….yes.  Duh.  But like, “Love on the Rocks”, “You Baby”, “Robert E. Lee”?  Every single song became better than the next.

Since my Dad was such a fan…he let us listen to it whenever we asked.  We fell asleep to it.  I loved it.

I was only seven when my Dad passed away, and somehow that Jazz Singer soundtrack (and a Collection of Kenny Rogers Greatest Hits) became two of the things that reminded me of him most.  In fact, we listened to them so much….that you could hear the other side through the cassette tape.

I guess when I finally got old enough to realize that he didn’t JUST sing the America Song, I was even more excited.

And when “What about Bob?” shed light on the fact that

“there are only two kinds of people in this world…
People who like Neil Diamond, and people who don’t”

What???  There are people who DON’T like Neil Diamond?

People who don’t want to know Sweet Caroline or Cracklin’ Rosie?  People who won’t be Forever in Blue Jeans?  People who aren’t spiritually moved by Brother Love?

I don’t want to know these people.

Gratefully, last winter, when it was announced that Neil would be coming to the great Salt Lake City…..I was able to find some more girls who wanted to turn on their heartlight with me.  And the 4 of us bought our awesome tickets.

Not so awesomely….I got sick.  And sicker, and sicker, and sicker.  I was ready to sell my ticket.  But it was breaking my heart.

I already had to give up the opportunity to attend “Wicked” with my ENTIRE family.  (THAT WAS HEART WRENCHING)  I have given up outings, projects, business partners, friends, parties.  Giving up my Neil ticket was almost more than my bed-bound heart could bare.  Particularly on days where I was losing all strength to be positive.

I know it sounds dramatic.  And I admit, I have a flare for the dramatic.  But after 6 months pretty much home bound and 2 months without leaving my home…I am entitled to a titch of drama.  (say “yes” here.  Otherwise, I’ll cry.)

A few weeks ago, I went to see one of my doctors.  We were trying to craft a pain plan to get me from here to AZ on a plane.  When I can only sit for about 5 minute increments, 3 hours on a plane seemed an impossibility.  She came up with some ideas.  And said, “I need you to try these out before you go so we know where we stand.  Go on a short shopping trip.  And then try one other outing and see how you fare.”

I, mostly kidding, said, “like go to the Neil Diamond concert?”

And she proceeded to listen to me sob about how I might actually die without it.  And she agreed to help me get there.  (on a totally unrelated note…..can I POSSIBLY stress enough the importance it is to seek a caring medical professional? I’m not kidding.  We have been blessed beyond words with those caring for me.)

On the way home from the appointment, I called my fellow Neil buddy, Char, and told her the AMAZING news.  I could barely believe that it might be true.  And….I told her that we’d BETTER be making those matching Tee-Shirts we’d been talking about….to celebrate.

From L to R: Amy (The Idea Room), Tauni (SNAP!), Me, Char (Crap I’ve Made)

So of course the uber-talented Char came up with a shirt that rocked.    Like, people were asking us left and right where we got them.  (Char has a more in-depth shirt tutorial and a download available for the Neil Silhouette….HERE)

Okay.  Let it be said.  I do not hold back my love while at a concert.  So, yes….there was screaming.  Loud singing.  And embarrassing dancing.  I’m sorry but there’s nothing better than the feeling of hearing the first 4 notes of a song and KNOWING what’s coming next.

I mean, it was ALL oldies. The greatest thing of all time. Even though I try to keep up on all the new stuff, there’s nothing like hearing all your faves.

PS….wanna know what my fave is?….here’s a hint:

I should have left after about an hour and a half.  Probably.  But I was surviving on pure adrenaline.  Plus, if I had.  I would have missed America.  And that would have been devastating.  It was also ALMOST devastating when I was battling passing out on the way out of the stadium.  But I had girls there ready to catch me.  Gratefully it didn’t come to that.

Overall it was amazing.
It would have been awesome regardless. But the fact that it is the one and only thing I have done this summer, and probably for a while to come, made it even more special.

Who’s a huge Neil fan?
I Am, I said!

Daybreak DIY Blogger House Update

Authored By: ellie g Author/Writer
July 25, 2012 --3:49 PM

Hi LCMF readers. I am missing you all SOOOOOO much. I feel like a piece of me has died. But I am overwhelmed with emotion when I read your encouraging comments and thoughts. Thank you so much for being so supportive as my family and I face an uphill battle. Your understanding and kindness have been so awesome for all of us!

I know I’ve teased this upcoming project on the LCMF Facebook page for the last few weeks. I am so excited to be a part of the upcoming DIY Blogger house at Daybreak for the 2012 SLC area Parade of Homes.

I even had the opportunity to talk about the DIY Blogger House on a local TV Show (Studio 5) back in May.

It is such a fun concept.  To showcase an amazing home (built by Bangerter Homes) and incorporate fun DIY ideas from some amazing local bloggers.  Not to mention the fact that these bloggers happen to be some of my bestest buddies.  I’m talking, they come to my house and bring me lunch when I can’t get out of bed.  They are amazing creative women.  And caring people to boot!

Here’s a little teaser video that Daybreak put together to show everyone what we were planning on doing to make this project a success.  (and yes…..that still pic of me is pretty much the grossest pic of all times!)

As I mentioned in my Studio 5 interview I have been paired up with my bestest buddy Char Coester from Crap I’ve Made to tackle 3 kids bedrooms in this home.

We are finishing up the last details this week on:

  • A gender neutral nursery
  • A young boy’s room
  • A teenage girl room

The teenage girl room has a really fun theme based on a wish made through the fabulous Utah Chapter of the Make-a-Wish foundation.  It has been my honor and pleasure to work closely with our inspire-ee (is that a word?), our designer, Brian Clark,  and Char on this room.

I’ve finally been given “clearance” by the big bosses to give you some sneak-peeks.  Okay….this one’s not that sneaky if you live in Daybreak, you can totally just drive by.  Which is exactly why I can show you.

How pretty is this quaint little house?  Isn’t is so homey feeling?  I’m flipping over backwards for that yellow door.  Yummy!

The yard landscaping was designed by Cynthia Bee from Utah Conservation Garden Park.  It’s so amazing! Particularly since it’s designed to use 35% less water than a normal home landscape.  That’s super important when living in a desert.  (did you know Utah is a desert?  Yep.  One of the driest in the nation.  Currently only Nevada is drier.  But we’ve been #1 before.)

It has NOT been green lighted for me to show you ANY of our projects yet.  But a little teasing never hurt anyone….right?

It’s like those things on Sesame Street where they slowly zoom out so you can guess what the picture is.  Yay!  A game!  I love games!

Char and I just finished up the last of my projects yesterday.  And I think she’ll be all done today.  And between our two blogs you will get in depth details and tutorials for ALL of them.  And trust me…….they are AWESOME!

I have to give (and will continue to give) the hugest props in all the land to my partner in crime….Miss Char of Crap I’ve Made.  She and I worked together on a BUNCH of stuff for the SNAP! Conference in the spring.  And even though we’ve been friends for a while now….we learned that we make a GREAT team.  Even under pressure, we still manage to laugh a lot and get a TON done.

She went into this project knowing that my health would most likely preclude me from being much actual help.
My mind’s okay.
Unless I’ve taken a lot of meds…..(remind me to tell you about the 2 hour meeting she and I had….and then I forgot most of it!  Oops!)

Anyway, she has spent countless hours helping me get all this stuff done, and on time.  Her kids even came over to help.  She’s just good people and I want to make sure she gets the credit she deserves!

I’m also very grateful to the Daybreak team who, even with ample warning that I would not be at 100%….said they wanted me to do the project anyway.  It has definitely kept me feeling relevant, and gave me the ability to be creative while I laid in bed.

So…..in the next few weeks, stay tuned for some REAL LCMF upcoming tutorials.  Like, the kind that you used to love.  Remember?  I’ve almost forgotten!  I can’t wait to share.

And if you are in the SLC area make plans to visit the SLC Parade of Homes.  It will give you a fun family outing, and if you are a do-it-yourself kind of gal (like me) it can spark some amazing ideas for you!  Get your creativity ready….

The Truth-As I See It

Authored By: ellie g Author/Writer
July 11, 2012 --2:59 AM

So often, people…lovely people…make comments to me about how I’m happy even though I’ve been pretty much in bed since March.  (PS….if you are running behind on that sitch you can check out my TMI post or also this quick video that explain it a little bit.)  Or how I look pretty made up every day. Or how I’m keeping my home, blog, marriage, and life running so smoothly.

And usually I laugh, like a snort kind.

Because that couldn’t be farther from the truth of my life.

You have to know, cute little blog readers

  • Most people don’t want you to see their dirty house.
  • Nobody likes complainers, so hopefully most people aren’t whining about their life all the time. (although….I CAN be that way….sorry if you’ve been on the other end of one of those days)
  • Everyone has smelly breath sometimes
  • Everyone burns their food on accident
  • Everyone yells at their friends, spouse, or kids…and then regrets it.
  • Everyone just decides it’s gonna have to be a Little Ceasars night
  • Look, everyone’s farts stink.

It’s just the truth.

So, as a response to all those well meaning people who think I live in heels and lipstick as I lay here in my perfectly clean home, with my Pinterest recipe crock-pot meal waiting for my family’s dinner……..I’ve made you a little video.

(if you are reading in an RSS reader, you will most likely need to click over to my blog to see it…and please do…it’s got some funny parts)

So now you know. I’d like credit for the fact that I, indeed, work miracles with that hair I have.  It’s taken years to master.

My double chins, and giant bosoms often make it difficult for me to eat while lying down.  And frequently, I lose food that I can’t retrieve.  Noodles are particularly advanced.

My toes have remained unpainted for a week now.  And (first world problem) that is the LONGEST I can remember that ever happening.  It’s hideous.

Am I pissy some days?  Heck yes!  Do I say swear words? More often than I should.

But honest and TRUE:

I WILL find something to learn from this.

I will figure out why I needed to have this particular trial.  I will count my blessings, even the tiny ones….like a perfectly ripe watermelon.  Or a tomato that actually grew under my care. (I KNOW!!)  There are things to be grateful for every day.  And there are people who would benefit from the truth of who YOU are and what YOU have to offer.

Promise.

The Address to Gettysburg Part 2

Authored By: ellie g Author/Writer
July 2, 2012 --6:29 PM

Last year about this time I was BASKING in what I felt was my most EPIC LCMF project to date. The Vinyl re-creation of the Gettysburg Address

Little did I know that an entire year later it would STILL be the most epic project to date.

(either that means that it was TRULY so epic that it will never BE topped….or that I’ve spent the last 12 months doing less than 100% quality work.)

Still probably one of the MOST asked about projects. And one of the MOST requested to reproduce.
(and PS…..people have begged and nearly offered me their first born for a copy of this project. So PLEASE keep your first borns. No need for that kind of desperation!)

I think I was pretty honest in saying that I don’t know of any person in their right mind who’d like to re-create it in vinyl. It literally took me days. And may be the culprit of why my bum hurts to this day. (okay…that last part isn’t true…)

But since it is so MUCH requested I decided to make it into a printable version for this year’s holiday.

I know it comes a bit late, I’m guessing most of you are all decorated for the season. But know that my heart was in the right place. I’ve had kind of a rough month.

Click on the arrow with a line under it…in the above window. Just press it, and the image file should download right to your computer! Easy Peezy!

You can then print the file anywhere you’d like. This file is sized at 16×20. It will not print optimally at a bigger size. (But you can print it at a smaller size if you’d like.)

As usual PLEASE follow the following rules for Less Cake {more frosting} printables:

  • LCMF prinatables are for PERSONAL USE only. You may not re-sell, re-distribute, or claim them as your own.
  • Please do not remove the watermark.
  • If posting on the internet, you MUST post a link back to this website.
  • Personalization, color changes, and other customizations are not available on freebie printables. They are offered “as-is”.

If you are interested in purchasing the print in different color schemes or without the LCMF watermark please visit Announced Designs where 4 color schemes are available for immediate download for a small charge.

I am still ABSOLUTELY in love with the message and the man. And still get misty every single time I read the speech in it’s entirety.

Even if I won’t be celebrating as much as I normally do. I will still have on my Playlist of awesome songs and I usually can see some fireworks from my back deck. So I’ll probably take a trip out there and see what I can see.

In the interest of feeling positive about the fact that I won’t be able to sit through a traditional fun fireworks show….I’ve tried to think of my Pollyanna thought. I have begun to play “The Glad Game” with my current health situation. Here’s what I have:

This year when Mr. Greenwood sings about “God Bless the USA”….
and he says “stand up, next to you”….
I’ll already be standing.
‘Cause I can’t sit.
There you go.

Happy Independence Day friends. Be safe with your celebrations!
