The Story of Reindeer Feed

Authored By: ellie g Author/Writer
December 9, 2011 --12:16 AM

Probably my FAVE thing about the holidays is the traditions that it brings. The music we MUST listen to. The movies we MUST watch. And mostly….the food we MUST make! I promise myself that I won’t go overboard, every year. But, sometimes it seems downright wrong to skip one of the traditional treats.

One thing we have to make every year is “Reindeer Feed.”

Some people call it “Muddy Buddies”. Or something else. But it’s “Reindeer Feed” at our house and it only comes out at Christmas.

A few years ago, I decided to define why we call it Reindeer Feed.
I’m not sure what possessed me. I think it was a church activity. Or a bought of sleeplessness. (I have brilliant ideas at about 4am!)

Each year, before we begin to make our yummy chocolate treats, we have to read the tale of “Reindeer Feed”.  My kids love it! Mom and Dad love it! And the Scout Troop loved it too.

The best part is the cliffhanger…how come the reindeer won’t fly?

Making your own reindeer feed is super easy-peasy.  You start off with

  • 6oz. of Milk Chocolate chips
  • 6oz. Semi-Sweet Chocolate chips
  • 1 cup Peanut Butter

The recipe calls for either melting them all in the microwave or over a double boiler.  I have to admit my laziness and say I never use a double boiler.  Just really low heat, and constant stirring.  It’s always worked well.

Once the mixture is completely melted and smooth, pour it over 1 whole box of Crispix cereal and stir.  Some of the pieces will break.  It’s not a big deal.  But don’t over stir.

Now comes the fun part!  (and the best part of the story too!!)  Pour the cereal (still wet) into a large sack.  Paper grocery sacks work great!  Next, pour 2 cups of powdered sugar into the bag.  Fold down the top of the bag.

AND GO TO TOWN!

The kids will love to shake up the “feed” until it is completely covered in powdered sugar.

Reindeer Feed makes a really awesome neighbor gift as well.  And SO EASY!

It’s even more fun to have holiday traditions when you share them with others.  I’m never against sharing our “sugar secrets” with others!

I’ve made these super fun printable recipe cards featuring one of Santa’s Reindeer. You can print them out for yourself, or share with friends!

Click on the arrow with a line under it…in the above window. Just press it, and the image file should download right to your computer! Easy Peezy!

You can then print the file anywhere you’d like. This file is sized at 8.5×11. It will not print optimally at a bigger size. (But you can print it at a smaller size if you’d like.)

As usual PLEASE follow the following rules for Less Cake {more frosting} printables:

  • LCMF prinatables are for PERSONAL USE only. You may not re-sell, re-distribute, or claim them as your own.
  • Please do not remove the watermark.
  • If posting on the internet, you MUST post a link back to this website.
  • Personalization, color changes, and other customizations are not available on freebie printables. They are offered “as-is”.

AND….

I would LOVE for your family to be able to share “The Story of Reindeer Feed” as well!

Announced Design is offering the story as a printable E-Book.

It is a 12 page fully illustrated story, with original artwork and illustrations.  Also included are the recipe cards (without a watermark) and as a bonus you will also get the “WARNING: May Cause Flight in Reindeer” labels that are pictured above.

The book comes as a .pdf file.  It can be printed on a home printer or taken to a professional printer as well.  Ours is just printed at home, then we put it in a very thin binder and covered the pages with page protectors.

The E-Book is just $12.  But until Christmas:

Less Cake {more frosting} readers can get a 20% discount by entering code

ILOVEFROSTING

at checkout

(that makes the book only $10)

I have to be honest, I’m sitting here eating some chocolatey goodness right this second.
And it’s WAY too late to be eating chocolate.
I am not currently flying….however, I hold out hope that might still happen.

HAPPY EATING!

Spooks and October-A Printable Calendar

Authored By: ellie g Author/Writer
October 1, 2011 --1:25 PM

Well hello October!
I’m here with a rare thing….a Saturday post.
Typically, I never post on the weekend. It’s just been a policy of mine.

But I didn’t get to this post yesterday, and today is October first. I can’t leave you hangin’ without an October calendar….can I?

My October calendar is filling up with

  • “not too spooky” Halloween parties
  • decorating
  • school breaks
  • a new niece on the way
  • and at some point my indecisive daughter will be forced to choose from her list of 20 costume possibilities.

So many things……

I hope your calendar is ready to be filled with lots of fun and frolic in the month of October.  And in anticipation of that…..here’s your October printable calendar.

And finally, since this post is kind of a mish-mosh anyway (as all calendar posts are….) A couple more exciting things to share:

Some of you saw on FB that I spent a morning at the salon this week, I posted a “before” shot.

This is my friend Janessa, from Lunatic Fringe.  She’s transformed my hair into something super fun.  (and short!)
I have a “reveal” all ready to post on Monday.  So stay tuned for that.  Promise, it’s a change.  Even though my hair was already short.

And…….

Perhaps you noticed that I have been a little sparse in the posting department in the last few weeks.  Well, it’s a function of 2 things.

  • #1-I’ve always made it a goal to only post great stuff.  I try not to fill up with too many “filler” type posts.  So, you will always know when I have something to post, it’s something I really feel proud to post.  Anyway, I have been working on tons of stuff, so posts will be upcoming.
  • #2-I’ve made a decision to open up a design business!  I am currently designing and programming the website that will host my shop and portfolio.

AnnouncedDesign.com

Is gonna be my baby for a while!  I’m working so hard on getting it set up.  It will offer:

  • brand new (never before seen) printables, posters, and other fun stuff
  • Customizable greeting cards and invitations
  • Design services for Company branding, logos, and business cards
  • Customized Canvas Art Design

And anything else I come up with!  YAY!

With the upcoming holidays and the fun Christmas season….I’m so excited to get started helping people “Announce” everything that is important in their lives.

So get ready……

I KNOW…..right?

You’re thinking I’m dead.  I’m NOT dead.  I just let the blog go this past week in favor of some other projects.  In fact, I have been busier than EVER!

Do you ever say “yes” to just too many things?  That may have been my downfall this week.  Too many “yes’s”.  Too many “sure, I can do that”.

Anyway, as life goes sometimes, I had to choose some things to say “no” to.  This blog was one of those things.  (also, shunned were..laundry, exercise, toilet cleaning, and eating healthy.  –that last one was just due to stress levels and laziness…not really anyone I can blame for that–)

But I promise that all the fun things I’m working on will make it on here eventually….and I can prove that I haven’t just been sitting around picking my nose all day!

Part of the frustration has been a move to a new computer this past week.  I’ve been so excited to use my new little baby….but underestimated the headache that it would be to move over.  I wonder sometimes if companies don’t think I’ll ever need to move my information…..or if they just don’t want me to.  Either way….it’s been a test of my personal ability to control my swears.  And it hasn’t always been successful.

Regardless, I think my CS Suite, all 800+ fonts, and 60 gigs of music have now found a lovely place to call home.  And I hope we’ll all be happy here.

I also brought this new baby home last week.  (yes, it’s finally here!  I can put away my surgical scissors forever!)  I haven’t spent a ton of time using it yet….mostly because of the aforementioned computer debacle….but hopefully in the next few weeks, you’re gonna see all kinds of goodness churning out from this bad boy.  Or is it a she?   Hmmmm…..?
I don’t know.
But I definitely think I should name it!

Also upcoming for our little family, is a trip to the Happiest Place on Earth!!  (10 days and counting!!! yipee!!!)  There’s always some prep that is associated with a vacation.  But this time, I’m in charge of everyone’s Halloween apparel.  Hopefully both of the new toys I have are going to help me make something stellar.

Speaking of Halloween….
There’s an AMAZING Halloween party going down at eighteen25 the past month.  If you’ve missed even ONE entry….go and check it out!  I love waking up every morning and seeing what’s there.  In fact, even though I’ve been computer MIA….I still check there.  I’ve spent a couple days getting my own submission in.  It’s finally done, and I’ve sent it off to the eighteen25 gals.
It will go up on September 28th.
Don’t worry.

I’ll remind you.

10,000 times!!

And finally….in the last bit of “what the heck has she been doing this past week, and is she possibly dead”….

I have a little side business.  I know…..right?  Who doesn’t.  Well, last year I had a friend suggest that I ought to actually get paid a little bit for designing things for all my family/friends.  Paid?  What?  Can you do that?  Apparently the answer is yes.

So at Christmas time, I made a little blog to show them some ideas for Christmas cards that I could make for them.

It went really well, and I made a few that I really liked.

Fast forward one year, and I have a lot more designing under my belt.  I decided that I ought to put some real effort into it this year and see what happens.  So I’m biting the bullet and “announcing”

Chic on a Shoestring Decorating

Announced will be the main hub for all my designing stuff.  It will focus on photo greeting cards and invitations…but I also will list blog design, logo design, custom canvas artwork, and other fun printables.

We will take your photos and put them into the designs and send you a .jpeg file for you to print anywhere you choose!
We also offer custom design options as well!

I’ve been working on setting up my business blog for the last few weeks.  It’s about 1/2 way there….but I do have the “Holiday Photo Card” section all set up.  YAY!

There are some really fun new things for this holiday season.  Some of my favorites are:

photography by: pink daffodil
peppermint twist

photography by: pink daffodil
holiday with class

argyle noel

photography by: moment2moment
snowstorm

photography by: pink daffodil
purple presents

The site isn’t 100% ready to go yet….But it’s getting there.

We still need to fill in baby, wedding, design, and other sections. But I thought I’d just give you a taste of what we’re going to be about.

So if you’re looking for a fun way to send your Holiday Cards this year, keep us in mind!

Thanks so much for hangin’ around, you cute things! I just love our little chats. I can’t promise to be here every day….but I can promise to show you what I have been doing….just so you don’t start an “Ellie g is Dead” campaign.
